Certification Guide

Most PMI certifications are designed for general project managers across all industries. The PMI-CP — Construction Professional — is different. It was built specifically for people who manage construction projects, addressing the unique challenges of the built environment that the PMP exam barely touches.

If you work in construction and have been wondering whether PMI-CP is the right credential for your career, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is PMI-CP?

PMI-CP stands for Construction Professional, a certification issued by the Project Management Institute. It validates your ability to manage construction projects across the full lifecycle — from pre-construction planning and design through execution, monitoring, and closeout.

Unlike PMP, which tests general project management principles applicable to any industry, PMI-CP focuses on construction-specific knowledge areas. These include construction contracts and procurement, safety and regulatory compliance, site management, building codes, and the unique stakeholder dynamics of construction projects.

PMI launched the PMI-CP certification to recognize that construction project management is a distinct discipline that requires specialized skills beyond what traditional project management frameworks address.

Who Is PMI-CP For?

PMI-CP is designed for professionals who work directly in construction project management. This includes general contractors and construction managers who lead projects from groundbreaking to completion, owners' representatives who oversee construction on behalf of building owners or developers, construction project engineers who coordinate between design teams and field crews, estimators and schedulers who have moved into project leadership roles, and subcontractor project managers who manage their scope of work on larger projects.

In Memphis and across the Mid-South, construction is a major industry driver. Infrastructure projects, commercial development, healthcare facility expansions at organizations like St. Jude, and logistics facility construction for companies like FedEx create steady demand for construction PMs who can demonstrate verified competence.

PMI-CP Exam Content Domains

The PMI-CP exam is organized around four domains that reflect the construction project lifecycle.

Domain 1: Project Governance. This domain covers establishing the governance framework for construction projects, including stakeholder identification, project selection and prioritization, regulatory requirements, and organizational alignment. It tests your ability to set up the structures that ensure a project runs smoothly from day one.

Domain 2: Project Planning and Design. This domain addresses pre-construction planning, including scope definition, design coordination, estimating, scheduling, procurement strategy, and risk identification. Construction professionals know that the decisions made during planning have the biggest impact on project outcomes — and the exam tests that understanding.

Domain 3: Project Execution and Control. This is the largest domain and covers the active management of construction work. Topics include contract administration, quality management, safety management, cost control, schedule management, change order processing, and field coordination. If you have managed construction projects, this domain tests the skills you use every day.

Domain 4: Project Monitoring and Closeout. The final domain covers performance monitoring, earned value analysis for construction, punch list management, commissioning, turnover to the owner, and lessons learned documentation.

PMI-CP Eligibility Requirements

PMI has established the following eligibility criteria for the PMI-CP exam. You need a secondary degree such as a high school diploma or associate's degree with 60 months of construction project management experience within the last eight years, or a four-year bachelor's degree with 36 months of construction project management experience within the last eight years.

You also need construction-specific project management education hours from an authorized provider. The education requirement ensures candidates understand the PMI framework as it applies to construction, not just general project management theory.

How PMI-CP Compares to PMP

Many construction professionals wonder whether they should get PMP, PMI-CP, or both. Here is how they differ.

PMP is industry-agnostic. It covers project management principles that apply to IT, healthcare, manufacturing, and every other sector. PMP is the most widely recognized PM certification in the world and is valued by employers across all industries.

PMI-CP is construction-specific. It covers the same project management fundamentals but applies them to construction scenarios, contracts, safety requirements, and building lifecycle challenges. It signals to employers that you don't just know project management — you know construction project management.

The strongest credential combination for a construction professional is holding both PMP and PMI-CP. PMP gives you broad recognition across industries, while PMI-CP demonstrates deep expertise in your specific domain.

Cost of PMI-CP Certification

The PMI-CP exam fee is $400 for PMI members and $550 for non-members. Training costs vary by provider and format. As with PMP, joining PMI for $139 per year plus a $10 application fee saves you $150 on the exam and provides access to construction-specific resources and standards.

Total investment including training, exam, and membership typically ranges from $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the training format you choose.

Why PMI-CP Matters in Memphis

Memphis is a construction-heavy market. The ongoing expansion of logistics facilities along the I-40 corridor, healthcare construction driven by major medical centers, downtown revitalization projects, and residential development across Shelby County all create demand for qualified construction project managers.

Having PMI-CP certification sets you apart in this competitive market. It tells Memphis employers and general contractors that your construction PM skills have been independently verified by the same organization that issues the PMP — the gold standard in project management credentials.

For construction companies bidding on federal, state, or municipal projects, having PMI-CP certified staff on your team can also strengthen your qualifications during the procurement process.

How to Prepare for PMI-CP

Because PMI-CP is a newer certification, there are far fewer training providers and study resources available compared to PMP. This is both a challenge and an opportunity — fewer people hold the credential, which makes it a stronger differentiator.

Duvoll Education is one of the few PMI Authorized Training Partners in Tennessee that offers PMI-CP preparation. Our training covers all four exam domains with instruction from professionals who have managed construction projects in the Memphis market. We offer both the complete PMI-CP boot camp and individual domain courses for professionals who want to focus on specific areas.

Our PMI-CP Domain I: Project Governance course is available as a standalone module for construction professionals who want to start with a focused introduction before committing to the full certification.

The Bottom Line

If you manage construction projects, PMI-CP is the most relevant certification you can earn. It validates the specialized skills that PMP does not fully cover, and it positions you as a credentialed expert in a field where formal credentials are increasingly expected. The combination of PMI-CP with PMP creates the strongest possible profile for construction project management leadership.

As the construction industry in Memphis and the Mid-South continues to grow, professionals who hold verifiable construction PM credentials will have a clear advantage in competing for the most rewarding projects and positions.
